To give you a helping hand, we have answered some of the most frequently asked questions about door handles. So, hopefully, we can help you narrow down your search. If not, you will have learnt some door handle trivia!

Are door handles reversible?

One question which we commonly hear is whether door handles for internal doors can be attached on either side of the door or whether the handle fits a specific side (left or right). The answer is no, most door handles are not reversible, and they are in fact designed for either the left or right side of the door.

At Ironmongery Experts, we sell all of our door handles in pairs so that you are provided with both sets of handles for your door. To discover which handle sits on which side, look at where the door is hinged. If the door is hinged on the right-hand side, then you need a right-sided handle, whereas when the door is hinged on the left-hand side, it’s a left-sided handle that you require.

Further checks can be conducted when attaching the handle, such as ensuring that it operates in a downward motion when opening the door. If this isn’t the case, and the handle instead moves upwards to open the door, then this would indicate the handle is on the wrong side. It’s an easy mistake to make, so just make sure to take extra care before attaching new door handles.

Are door handles fire rated?

Some door handles are fire-rated, but not all. At Ironmongery Experts, we stock a variety of fire-rated door handles, including our best-selling Carlisle Brass Matt Black Serozzetta Philidelphia Lever on round rose. These are suitable for fire doors FD30 and FD60, offering protection from fire up to 30 and 60 minutes, respectively. Can door handles be painted?

Yes, door handles can be painted. A DIY job can often be done to revive old doorknobs, door handles or even the doors they are attached to. The easiest and most effective way to paint your door handle is using spray paint in a well-ventilated area. This allows you to easily cover the surface area in the colour and tone you desire, creating a brand new look.

There are however some things to consider before replacing old door handles, such as which handle you require (right or left), the people operating the door (does it include elderly people or children?), the type of handle you require (i.e. lever handle on a backplate or lever handle on a rose) as well as considering the style and finish to match the rest of your interiors.

What door handles can be used outside?

Technically you can attach any type of door handle to an external door, however, there are certain materials and finishes that can better endure harsh weather conditions, in comparison to others. For instance, stainless steel is one of the best finishes for exterior use as it is extremely corrosion resistant.
