Should I Re-train as a Locksmith? – Keytek Academy

Should I re-train as a Locksmith?Should I re-train as a Locksmith?

The Locksmith industry is a very attractive industry for those looking to re-train as it offers flexible working hours, the ability to shape your own career and the opportunity to run your own business.

There are many aspects of becoming a Locksmith that you will have to keep in mind before you decide to re-train, so we have used our expertise to create this guide of all the things you should consider before re-training to become a Locksmith and why you should take the leap in 2022!

1.      Owning Your Own Locksmith Business

Owning your own business is a dream that many people share and re-training as a Locksmith gives you the freedom to start one, create your own working pattern and have complete control. But what is unique about the Locksmith industry is that whilst you can have your own independent business you can also join communities that can help you gain work and experience as you start out. Those who re-train as Locksmiths will often join a subcontracting network to bolster their work as their private business grows to create a balance where you can hit the ground running.

You can find more information about subcontracting on our advice hub!

Owning your Own Business Considerations:

  • Are you interested in owning your own business?

  • Do you want to set your own hours to fit your working life around other important aspects in your life?

2.      Career Flexibility and Pathways

The Locksmith umbrella is a varied one, where you can expand and specialise in different areas such as auto locksmithing, access control and home security installation which gives you multiple pathways to expand your business and career. With continual developments in home security, there will always be something more than you can learn and keep up to date with.

Most Locksmiths will start out as domestic and commercial Locksmiths, but with the variety of different career progressions you can continue to expand your knowledge base and service offering to create a Locksmith business that is fully unique and suits the needs of your customers!

You’ll never get bored in an industry where every job is different and you can always expand your knowledge!

Career Flexibility and Pathways Considerations:

  • Do you want a career that can grow and adapt to changing developments in the industry?

  • Do you want the option to design your career with different specialities and pathways?

3.      Demand

Something that is quite unique to the Locksmith industry is the continual demand. Unfortunately, locks will always break, people will get locked out and keys will get lost, so the demand for Locksmiths is always present. The industry itself is less affected than others when there are changes in society and the economy.

For example, during the global pandemic, Locksmiths offered an essential emergency service and were considered key workers so were allowed to continue their services.

Likewise on the other hand due to the demand from customers you will have to consider sometimes working early or late hours and working at the weekend as you unfortunately can’t guarantee that customers will always need you between 9-5. If someone was locked out of their house at 8pm would you be able to provide your services?

Locksmith Demand Considerations:

  • Do you think your local area has the demand for a trained local Locksmith?

  • Could you offer emergency services to those that are locked out or their lock has broken?

  • Are you willing to sometimes work early / later hours and weekends if need be?
