What Are the National and International Standard-Setting Bodies?

.wp-image-1719{display:none;}standard-setting bodies

Today we speak about the existing standard-setting bodies. But first we want make some premise about standardisations and unifications.

What are the difference between standardisations and unifications?

First of all, the standardisations are some actions to establish and enforce rules, to put a specific field of activity in order. Secondly, the unifications are forms of standardisation. Indeed, these forms bring together different dimensional requirements so as to define mutually interchangeable products (or combination) in a finite number of types (or variants). But what is a norm specifically? The norm, in short, is a rule that establishes the execution or the conditions for drawing up of product that we want to

  • unify the use
  • ensure interchangeability.

What are the standard-setting bodies?

There are both global and national standard-setting bodies.

Globally, for example, there are:

  • ISO (International Organization for Standardization)
  • IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission).

In Europe, there are also:

  • CEN (European Committee for Standardization)
  • CENELEC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization).

And the national ones..

Nationally, however, we find other standard-setting bodies. In Italy, for example, there are:

  • UNI (Ente Nazionale di Unificazione)
  • CEI (Italian Electrotechnical Committee).

In other European countries, however, there are:

  • DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung) in Germany
  • AFNOR (Association Française de Normalisation) in France
  • BS (British Standards) in UK.

And overseas? In the United States, we find the ANSI (American National Standards Institute) in addition to the collaboration of several professional organizations including

  • ASME (American Society for Mechanical Engineers)
  • AISI (American Iron and Steel Institute)
  • SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers)
  • IECC (Institute of Electrical and Electronic o Engineers).
