Locksmiths are being bombarded with questions about transponder keys and how to obtain duplicates. Many car owners will visit their dealership but end up paying a premium to have their car key copied.

Learn about transponder keys, how they improve security, how to get a copy, and why remote key copies can be more expensive than expected.

What does transponder key do?

Microchips are used in transponder devices to transmit a low-level signal from a key that is read by a remote receiver. The manufacturer assigns a unique serial number to the microchip which allows it to unlock or open as the receiver must detect the correct serial number using radio frequencies. Transponder keys, like key fobs, are frequently used with car locks and home security systems, as well as to open gates and garage doors.

When a transponder key is inserted into a car, a signal is sent to a receiver located near the ignition. When the driver turns the key, the car will start if the digital serial number in the transponder matches the one programmed in the car.

Benefits of Transponder Keys

More Secure

When paired a transponder key is required for the car to start. This means that if a thief breaks into it, they will be unable to drive away without the transponder. They keep cars from being stolen by interpreting ‘hot wiring’ as ineffective. The car will not start if the microchip in the key or the exact serial number is not detected.

Easy to Use

Car owners love these keys because they are so simple to use. With only a few buttons, they are the simplest way to open and lock your vehicle, and their portable size makes them very convenient.

Great Functionality

Not only does it make locking your vehicle easier, but it also activates your vehicle’s alarm system, providing additional protection from criminals. Furthermore, because your car key is unique to your vehicle, no one else will be able to gain entry.

Does my car key have a transponder?

If your vehicle was manufactured after 1995, your key should contain a transponder chip inside the plastic head of the key fob. Keyless entry is now accessible on more recent models of higher-end vehicles. This requires the use of a start/stop ignition model with no traditional key attached.

Locking Commands

Transponder Keys often have locking commands within the fob. They usually include a unlock, lock and, unlocking of the boot option.

Mechanical Key

Within the plastic shell the mechanical metal key will poke out. This is used to start the ignition and also to open and lock the car doors manually. This makes them different to keyless entry as they still have a traditional metal key.

Immobiliser

An immobiliser is an electronic device installed in a vehicle that prevents the engine from starting unless the correct key or key fob is present. Because the engine can only be started with the correct key, it cannot be hotwired, even if someone gains access to it.

Radio Frequency Transmitter Chip

Usually embedded within the plastic casing of the key head on the thumb turn. The transmitter uses radio waves to send a signal to your cars transmitter which will activate the locking system on your car.

Key Fob

Whether they are attached to the key or separate on a key ring, the key fob is a sign of a transponder key. They usually contain the locking command buttons on them to allow you to gain access to your vehicle.
