Windows designed for assembly in the US. What certification is needed?

blog | 18.12.2023

European windows, windows manufactured in Poland, are becoming increasingly popular in the US. Why? After all, it is America that is famous for its innovative achievements. However, when it comes to windows, it is the country of the Old Continent that sets the standards. European windows are much better in terms of quality and technology. In addition, they have the certificates required in the United States and can be adapted for installation in that country.

Why it is worth buying and importing windows from Poland to the US

There are many factors in favor of buying and importing Polish windows to the United States. Firstly – European windows outclass American windows in terms of materials and technology. They are more resistant to condensation, which reduces energy consumption, especially in colder climates. In addition, most U.S. windows use double glazing, while European windows may have triple or even quadruple glazing.

Secondly, American windows are standardized, while European windows are "tailor-made." It would seem that this standardization is a big advantage. Such windows are proven, we know what to expect from them, they are safe and theoretically cheaper. Nothing could be further from the truth. The advantage of Polish, European windows is that they are manufactured to the size and special order of the customer. They have the perfect dimensions, color, accessories and are not at all more expensive. Moreover, even if you find someone who makes American windows to size, their quality leaves much to be desired, not to mention the additional cost.

And lastly, Polish windows are cheaper than windows made in the United States. Although Polish windows are qualitatively superior to their American rivals, you can usually buy them 40% to 50% cheaper.

Windows from Poland are cheaper for several reasons:

1. German technology – Polish manufacturers use advanced, mostly German technology, rather than spending resources to create something from scratch.
2. Low production costs – Polish labor is more than four times cheaper than American labor, all due to the fact that wages in Poland are at a completely different level.
3. Automation – Polish windows are cheaper because of the highly automated production process. We use the best and latest production machines.

U.S. certified PVC windows

One of the most important certifications that is necessary for windows exported to the US is the NFRC certification.

NFRC gives performance ratings for windows and doors in five categories – heat transfer value (Uw – European version, U-value – in the US), radiant transmittance (g – European version, SHGC – in the US), light transmittance (Lt – European version, VLT – in the US), air permeability and condensation resistance.

This makes it possible to compare the energy efficiency of individual windows and doors and determine whether a product is compliant.

The certification methods set forth by the NFRC are the only way to ensure Energy Star and Energy Code* compliance for windows in the US.

* Energy Star – a program run by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy that promotes energy efficiency.

*Energy Code – the U.S. building energy code, which is a subset of the building code that sets minimum requirements for the energy-efficient design and construction of new and renovated buildings.
